Messiah: Advent Series
“Now there was a man in Jerusalem, whose name was Simeon, and this man was righteous and devout, waiting for the consolation of Israel, and the Holy Spirit was upon him. And it had been revealed to him by the Holy Spirit that he would not see death before he had seen the Lord’s Christ.”
As we enter into the Advent season we remember that Simeon was not waiting alone. Many, like him, had grown up learning the prophesies and promises that God would one day send an Anointed One, the Messiah, to rescue His people and restore God’s kingdom. But though many were waiting, few would recognize His humble arrival as a swaddled infant. Simeon was one of those.
“[One day] he came in the Spirit into the temple, and when the parents brought in the child Jesus, to do for him according to the custom of the Law, he took him up in his arms and blessed God and said, ‘Lord, now you are letting your servant depart in peace, according to your word; for my eyes have seen your salvation that you have prepared in the presence of all peoples, a light for revelation to the Gentiles, and for glory to your people Israel.’”
This Advent season we will reflect on four of the Old Testament promises made about this coming Messiah and see how they found their fulfillment in Jesus Christ.
- Week 1: A Great Shepherd Is Coming!
- Week 2: A Better Temple Is Coming!
- Week 3: A Son Is Coming!
- Week 4: God Is Coming!
Let’s pray that Christ would be exalted in our own hearts through this series and that those who have yet to recognize Jesus as Simeon did, would find their way to our worship services and encounter the Messiah themselves.
